Features and applications

1.Good conductivity

Aluminum has relatively good electrical conductivity and is an excellent electrical conductor. Although its conductivity is lower than that of copper, for many electrical application scenarios, its conductivity is sufficient to meet the demand. For example, in general industrial power distribution systems, large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars can effectively transmit electrical energy and reduce energy loss during transmission. Its conductivity is usually around 35 - 38 MS/m (megasiemens/meter), which enables it to carry large currents.

2.Light weight

The density of aluminum is about 2.7g/cm³. In contrast, the density of copper is about 8.96g/cm³. This lighter weight makes large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars more convenient during installation and transportation. In the assembly of large electrical equipment or the installation of building electrical systems, using aluminum busbars can reduce the weight of the entire system. For example, in the power distribution room of a high-rise building, using aluminum busbars as busbars can reduce the load on the building and is convenient for construction personnel to install.

3.High cost-effectiveness

Aluminum is one of the most abundant metal elements in the earth's crust, and its raw material cost is relatively low. In large-scale electrical applications, using large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars is more economical than using copper busbars. This makes it widely used in fields such as the power industry. For example, in the construction of substations, the extensive use of aluminum busbars can effectively control costs while ensuring the basic performance of power transmission.

4.Good corrosion resistance

Aluminum can naturally form a dense protective film of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) in the air. This protective film can prevent the aluminum busbar from being further oxidized and corroded, giving it good corrosion resistance under general environmental conditions. For example, in some outdoor electrical equipment connections, aluminum busbars can resist the erosion of natural factors such as rain and humidity and prolong their service life. However, in harsh chemical environments such as strong acids and alkalis, additional protective treatments may be required for aluminum busbars, such as applying anti-corrosion paint.

Easy to process and install

Large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars can be processed in various ways such as cutting, bending, and drilling to meet different installation requirements. It can be made into various shapes according to the actual layout of electrical equipment and connection requirements. For example, inside a power distribution cabinet, the aluminum busbar can be bent at an appropriate angle to connect electrical components at different positions, and it can be installed by means of bolt connection or welding, and the operation is relatively simple.

5.Good heat dissipation performance

Aluminum has a relatively high thermal conductivity of about 237W/(m·K). This enables large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars to effectively dissipate heat when generating heat due to current transmission. In application scenarios with high current density, good heat dissipation performance helps to maintain the temperature stability of the aluminum busbar and prevent performance degradation or even damage due to overheating. For example, when using an aluminum busbar connection at the terminal of a large motor, the aluminum busbar can dissipate the heat generated by the motor operation in time to ensure the normal operation of the motor.

II. Applications

1.Busbar application in power systems

In substations and power distribution rooms, large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars are often used as busbars. Busbars are conductors that collect and distribute electrical energy. Aluminum busbars can transmit electrical energy from transformers to various power distribution cabinets or electrical equipment. For example, in substations of 110kV and below, the main busbars usually use aluminum busbars. The specifications are determined according to the capacity and current load of the substation, and can effectively transmit high-voltage and large-current electrical energy to ensure the stable operation of the power system.

Connection of industrial electrical equipment

Used to connect large industrial motors, transformers, electric furnaces and other equipment. In industrial production processes, these equipment usually require a large amount of electrical energy to operate. Large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars can provide reliable electrical energy connections to ensure the normal operation of equipment. For example, in the electric furnace equipment of a steel plant, aluminum busbars connect the high-voltage power supply with the heating elements of the electric furnace and transmit thousands of amperes of current to meet the heating requirements of the electric furnace.

2.Building electrical systems

In the electrical shafts or power distribution rooms of high-rise buildings, aluminum busbars are used to distribute electrical energy to the distribution boxes of each floor or each room. It can effectively reduce line losses, and due to its light weight, it has less impact on the load of the building structure. For example, in a 30-story commercial building, the trunk line from the power distribution room in the basement to the distribution boxes on each floor can use aluminum busbars for power distribution.

3.Electrical connection in transportation field

In the electrical systems of transportation tools such as electric vehicles and electric trains, large-caliber conductive aluminum busbars are used to connect battery packs, motors and various electrical control units. Due to its light weight and good conductivity, it can meet the requirements of electrical connections for transportation tools. For example, in electric vehicles, aluminum busbars are used to connect the battery management system and the motor controller to effectively transmit electrical energy and help reduce the overall weight of the vehicle and improve energy efficiency.
